Consolidation at the top
KBP Brands reached 1,224 total units in 2026, up from 1,119 in 2025, and remains the nation's largest KFC franchisee at 831 locations β roughly a quarter of the entire U.S. KFC system. KBP has also diversified beyond Yum! Brands, adding 119 Arby's and 167 Sonic units across two rounds. Ampex Brands runs roughly 600 units with about $500M of revenue from Richardson, Texas, and has crossed from franchisee to franchisor by acquiring Au Bon Pain.123
Institutional capital has arrived
Eyas Capital acquired BOJ of WNC β Bojangles' largest franchise group, 120 restaurants across six states β and immediately committed to more than 40 new units in Cincinnati and Columbus, taking its portfolio past 350 franchise units. Brentwood Associates and Sixth Street invested in Far West Services, the largest West Coast Wingstop franchisee at 127 locations. Guernsey Holdings, a multi-sector franchisee, bought 20 Zaxby's in South Carolina.456
And so has distress
Sailormen entered 2026 with 136 Popeyes restaurants across Florida and Georgia, 3,300 employees and $233.5M of fiscal 2025 revenue. It filed Chapter 11 in January 2026 and sold 97 restaurants for $16.55M across five buyers. Read the per-restaurant pricing: Popeyes corporate paid roughly $600,000 per restaurant for 16 Miami units, 61 Biscuits about $370,000 per restaurant in West Palm Beach, and Pulse Restaurant Group about $54,000 per restaurant for 50 units across Tampa, Tallahassee, Pensacola and Jacksonville. Roughly 33 restaurants attracted no buyer.78
The second-generation operator
Beneath the platforms, the most durable growth in chicken franchising comes from families redeploying capital between brands. The Korpal brothers, whose parents ran 22 Subway franchises in Southeast Texas, signed a 13-unit Golden Chick development agreement covering ten Houston units over four years and three in Beaumont. SXThree Restaurant Group operates 20 Golden Chicks in central Texas and is targeting 100 by 2030. Layne's added ten new franchisees in 2025, including operators from the Wendy's and Arby's systems.9101112
What it means
Brand unit counts conceal almost everything that matters. Bojangles' footprint did not change when 120 of its restaurants passed from a founder-operator to an investment platform. KFC's closure count does not tell you which operator is absorbing the survivors. The chicken industry's real ownership map is held privately, updated through bankruptcy dockets, franchise transfers and development agreements β and that is precisely why it is worth building.
