Method: YouGov brand popularity surveys, filtered to the 10 fried chicken chains in the panel.

Notice the gap. Chick-fil-A leads the category on every financial measure CSW tracks — a $9.16M average unit volume and $23.9B in systemwide sales — yet ranks third among fried chicken chains on YouGov consumer popularity3, and does not top the 2026 sandwich rankings at all. Consumer affection and category dominance are different things, and the brands that confuse them tend to over-invest in the wrong one.

Category context

  • The chicken sandwich wars began on August 12, 2019, when Popeyes launched its chicken sandwich and the resulting exchange with Chick-fil-A went viral. More than 20 American fast food brands added chicken sandwiches within the following two years.4
  • Fried chicken concept traffic rose 3% in the year ending September 2025 while traffic to all restaurant concepts fell 1%.5
  • Dave's Hot Chicken, Raising Cane's and Church's Texas Chicken each draw millions of visits per month; Chick-fil-A posted year-over-year visit growth from September 2025 through February 2026.5
